President of the American Committee for US-Russia Accord Katrina vanden Heuvel said she sees clear parallels to the 2006 midterms, when Republicans suffered defeat due to the Iraq war

WASHINGTON, November 4. /TASS/. The results of the current midterm elections could mirror the outcome of the 2006 congressional elections, when the Republican Party lost control of both chambers due to the war in Iraq, Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation and President of the American Committee for US-Russia Accord, told TASS.

"The Iran war is deeply unpopular according to exit polls. The parallels to the 2006 midterms are clear when the Iraq war devastated Republicans politically. Americans are showing in these last years they don't want another endless Middle East war and Democrats in Congress could increase pressure on Trump to end the Iranian conflict," she said.

"I don't think either party will do much to stem the dangerous prospect of nuclear escalation. <…> We desperately need a new arms control disarmament regime. I do not see either Democratic or Republican Party focusing on this issue," the expert noted.

The United States is holding its midterm congressional elections, with one-third of the Senate and all seats in the House of Representatives contested. Voters are also electing governors in 36 states and territories. Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress.
