Democrats could stop funding US-Iran war in event of their election win — expert
Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University Peter Kuznick separately noted that support for the war is "extraordinarily low and dropping"
WASHINGTON, November 4. /TASS/. Should the Democratic Party win the US midterm congressional elections, its representatives could put an end to the funding of the war against Iran, Professor Peter Kuznick, Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University in Washington, told TASS.
"Democratic control of one or both houses of Congress can make continuing the war much more difficult. They can cut off funding for the Iran war much as they finally did for the Vietnam war. They can make deeper cuts in Trump’s military spending," said Kuznick, commenting on potential implications of the US midterm election results for US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy agenda.
Meanwhile, "the election’s impact on Trump’s foreign policy may be less than on his domestic policy," the expert noted. "He (Trump - TASS) plans to rule the next two years through [presidential] vetoes and executive orders. That will only get him so far. He may be able to continue his tariffs and warmaking, but he will be greatly constrained by Democrats’ control of the Congressional purse and powers of investigation and subpoena and the overall profound unpopularity of his policies," Kuznick stressed.
"Support for his war against Iran, for example, is extraordinarily low and dropping, as are his approval ratings. If he continues to pursue policies that are so deeply unpopular with the American people, he will only ensure that the Republicans get pulverized again in the 2028 election," he concluded.
The United States is holding its midterm congressional elections, with one-third of the Senate and all seats in the House of Representatives contested. Voters are also electing governors in 36 states and territories. Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress.
