James Carden, a board member and senior adviser at the American Committee for US-Russia Accord, noted that Democrats would increase pressure on the US president "to keep up the war effort"

NEW YORK, November 4. /TASS/. A potential decisive victory of the US Democratic Party in the country’s midterm elections could pose a risk of escalating the conflict in Ukraine, James Carden, a retired diplomat and former advisor to the US-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission, told TASS, as he commented on possible implications of the US midterm election results for US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy agenda.

"The bottom line is this, no matter what the result, the war will continue," said the expert, who currently serves as a board member and senior adviser at the New York-based American Committee for US-Russia Accord (ACURA).

"If the Democrats win, they will increase their rhetorical attacks on Trump," as well as "increase the pressure on an already weak and pliant Trump to keep up the war effort," he said. "A Democratic Blue Wave does not mean peace is at hand, in fact, when it comes to Russia and Ukraine, it means the opposite," Carden noted.

The United States is holding its midterm congressional elections, with one-third of the Senate and all seats in the House of Representatives contested. Voters are also electing governors in 36 states and territories. Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress.
