About ten people took part in the protest

LONDON, November 2. /TASS/. Anti-war demonstrators have blocked the entrance to the Lakenheath Air Force Base in Suffolk County in eastern United Kingdom used by the United States, BBC reported.

About ten people took part in the protest, including 94-year-old human rights activist Margaret Owen. The demonstrators linked themselves with a chain and then chained themselves to a car parked nearby, it said.

According to the protest group No More Bloody Wars, the demonstration was directed against "illegal wars" involving the United States. Its participants also demanded that the British government close UK military bases to the US military, thus ceasing to become complicit in the conflict in the Middle East. They also expressed concern that nuclear weapons were deployed at the base after a long break.

Suffolk police highlighted that it was a "small protest," which resulted in several arrests.

Last July British portal UK Defense Journal quoted sources as saying that the United States had deployed tactical nuclear weapons in the United Kingdom for the first time since 2008. According to it, several B61-12 tactical thermonuclear bombs were deployed at the Lakenheath base. According to the publication, they were delivered to the UK from the US’ Kirtland air force base in New Mexico, where the US Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center is located, and placed in a new storage facility specially built for this purpose.

Nuclear weapons have been stored at the Lakenheath base since 1949. Eighteen years ago they were removed. Currently, the United Kingdom's nuclear weapons are deployed on four Vanguard-class submarines carrying US Trident II (D5) ballistic missiles.
