BELGRADE, October 17. /TASS/. Albanian police are using rubber bullets and other riot control equipment to disperse anti-government protests in Tirana city center, the CNA news portal said.

Protests in the Albanian capital have entered their fifth consecutive day as demonstrators are trying to seize government buildings. Police use water cannons to quell the unrest.

The unrest in Tirana broke out on October 13, during a student protest outside the Ministry of Education. Protests continued on the following day, and escalated when protestors, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, attempted to break through to his residence. When police dispersed the crowd, rioters broke into groups and began attacking government buildings in downtown Tirana, including the parliament, the Justice Ministry, the State Archives, and other agencies.

Sali Berisha, the leader of Albania’s leading opposition force, the Democratic Party of Albania, has declared his support for the ongoing protests.
