WASHINGTON, October 15. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that Canada will eventually become part of the United States.

"They'll end up being the 51st state because it's the only way it works," he said at a campaign rally in Arizona ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

"You know, we don't need them, but they need us," he said, adding that the United States has been losing up to $100 billion a year due to trade and economic relations with Canada. "So they'll be doing something just like Greenland," he noted. In September, Trump, and the Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, signed an agreement on Washington taking control of Greenland’s security.

Trump has repeatedly called on Canada to become part of the United States. The US leader has referred to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as a governor more than once. Canadian authorities have rejected the possibility of joining the United States. In an interview with The New York Times in late September, Carney said that Canadian authorities had spent the past year preparing for the possibility of a US military invasion, although they considered such a scenario unlikely.
