French politician warns Ukraine’s EU accession to amount to EU’s 'hara-kiri' — newspaper
This will result in a loss of sovereignty and "absolutely huge economic losses" for France, Marine Le Pen, National Rally candidate in the 2027 French presidential election, said
LONDON, October 14. /TASS/. Ukraine’s membership of the European Union would mount to the EU "committing hara-kiri," resulting in a loss of sovereignty and "absolutely huge economic losses" for France, Marine Le Pen, National Rally candidate in the 2027 French presidential election, said.
In an interview with the Financial Times, she expressed doubt that Paris would continue to support EU funding for Ukraine if she won the election. "We’ve already done 90 billion euros of loans, that’s 18 billion euros for France; 18 billion euros is really a lot," Le Pen said.
She added that if elected president, she would try to prevent the adoption of the EU’s new seven-year budget, which contains a Ukraine funding instrument worth up to 100 billion euros, by withholding half of France’s contribution.
France is due to hold the first round of its presidential election on April 18, 2027. If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote, the two candidates who receive the most votes will face off in the second round on May 2. Under the French Constitution, incumbent President Emmanuel Macron cannot run in the 2027 election after completing his second term in office.
