LONDON, October 9. /TASS/. Sagal Abdi-Wali, a Somalia-born refugee and local councilor, won the Holborn and St Pancras by-election to the House of Commons, the lower chamber of the UK Parliament, official results of the October 8 election show.
Abdi-Wali, who represents the Labour Party, gathered 45.17%. She arrived in the UK in the 1990s, as a refugee from Somalia. Her main election rival, Green Party leader Zack Polanski, received 32.81% of the vote.
The Holborn and St Pancras seat in the House of Commons became vacant after former Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on September 1.
In all, 15 candidates took part in the election.
