Syria supports Saudi Arabia, yet does not want to be party in Yemeni war
Damascus firmly supports Saudi Arabia, but its policy does not call for opening new fronts, the Information Ministry said
BEIRUT, October 8. /TASS/. The Syrian armed forces are not fighting in Yemen alongside the Saudi-led coalition, the Information Ministry reported.
"Damascus firmly supports Saudi Arabia, but its policy does not call for opening new fronts," the statement emphasized.
Earlier, the Axios news outlet reported that Damascus and Riyadh were allegedly discussing the deployment of between 10,000 and 20,000 Syrian servicemen to Yemen to participate in military operations against the Ansar Allah (Houthi) movement. According to Axios, this move could give the war in Yemen a religious dimension and escalate the conflict. The alleged contingent was supposed to consist of Syrian Sunnis who would fight against the Shia group Ansar Allah, which controls the north of the country.
On October 6, Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa met in Riyadh with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. Their talks focused on discussing strategic plans for cooperation. Al-Sharaa invited the crown prince to visit Damascus to "strengthen diplomatic ties and begin a new phase of joint Arab action."
