Lithuanian army to send up to 100 troops to border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Region

VILNIUS, October 7. /TASS/. The Lithuanian army will deploy up to 100 troops to the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Region to assist border guards, Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said.

"Up to 100 troops will be deployed to the border," he said in an interview with national radio LRT.

According to the defense minister, the army will be stationed at the border for the next few weeks.

The Defense Ministry’s decision came in response to a request from Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas to strengthen security along the border with the Kaliningrad Region. In his appeal to the defense minister, Katelynas said he had been forced to seek assistance in view of the overall security situation in the region. The interior minister called the deployment of troops to the border a preventive measure.
