Impeachment motion for top diplomat Araghchi registered with Iranian parliament — agency
The procedure was initiated by Amir-Hossein Sabeti, a member of parliament from Tehran
TUNIS, October 6. /TASS/. Iran’s parliament has registered an impeachment motion against Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Mohammad Rashidi, a member of the parliament’s presidium, told the Tasnim news agency.
"An impeachment motion for Araghchi, the foreign minister, has been registered but has not yet been submitted to the presidium. It looks like the motion was registered by a lawmaker but was not submitted to the presidium today," he said.
The procedure was initiated by Amir-Hossein Sabeti, a member of parliament from Tehran. Among his complaints against Araghchi, the lawmaker cited recent contacts with US representatives in New York which he claimed had taken place without the Iranian supreme leader’s approval.
The fact that the motion was registered doesn’t mean that a no-confidence vote will automatically take place. According to the procedure, the initiative needs to be supported by at least ten lawmakers and considered by a relevant commission with the minister’s participation. If neither of the signatories recall their signatures, the issues will be referred to a plenary meeting where the top diplomat will answer lawmakers’ questions. And only after that can parliament hold a no-confidence vote for the minister.
