Iranian Foreign Ministry confirms discussions on possible withdrawal from NPT

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that Iran currently remains a party to the treaty and that the Foreign Ministry would abide by the decision of the competent authorities on the matter

TEHRAN, October 4. /TASS/. Iranian elites are holding serious discussions on the possibility of the country withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), although Tehran continues to fulfill all its obligations for the time being, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said.

"This issue is being seriously discussed in expert circles. Iran, as a party to the NPT and a country that has fully complied with its obligations, has come under attack. If a country is a member of the NPT, it should be able to exercise its rights," he said at a briefing.

At the same time, Baghaei stressed that Iran currently remains a party to the treaty and that the Foreign Ministry would abide by the decision of the competent authorities on the matter.
