MOSCOW, September 30. /TASS/. The unification of Romania and Moldova is an unlikely scenario because the peoples of both countries are not interested in this, Romanian blogger and expert at the Global Fact-Checking Network Ioana Jaleel told TASS.

"I can honestly tell you that the Romanian people are not interested in any union with Moldova. They believe that Moldova would be a burden for us because their economy is worse than ours and it would be very difficult for us to actually help them rise to the same level as us," she said in response to a question what ordinary residents of Romania and Moldova think about the possible unification of the countries.

"Also, as I know from my Moldovan friends - because I have many friends in Moldova as well - they don't want it either. They just want to get to the European Union and they feel this is the easiest way to do it. But at the level of the population, no."

Jaleel explained that initially this topic was indeed discussed.

"We even had a member of parliament in Romania who wanted to discuss such a law. This woman sometimes went even to Russia and she promoted this idea," she said.

"When our new president was elected, in the first month he very often visited the Republic of Moldova. Moldovan President Maia Sandu came to visit us. But the relationship is not that close anymore. We don't see them together anymore. So I don't think this (the unification of the two countries - TASS) is a realistic scenario.".
