UN, September 22. /TASS/. Under the US-Denmark agreements, Washington will gain permanent full control over the security of Greenland, President Donald Trump said.

"As I announced just days ago, the United States has also reached an unprecedented agreement regarding the northern frontier of North America, the large and strategically vital piece of land known as Greenland," he told the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

According to Trump, the United States is gaining "permanent control over security and all other needs on that territory. We will have the complete ability to do what is necessary to defend the American continent and also Europe and other places."

The ceremony to sign the documents with the participation of Trump as well as representatives of Denmark and Greenland is currently taking place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Earlier, Denmark, of which Greenland is an autonomy, categorically rejected the US president’s intention to gain control over the island. Trump has repeatedly said that Greenland should join his country to ensure security. Even during his first term, he proposed buying the island, while in 2025, he promised to annex it, threatening Copenhagen with trade duties in case of refusal.

In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen, in addition to their alliance obligations under NATO, signed the Greenland Defense Treaty. Under it, the United States undertook to defend the island against possible aggression. It is home to the American space base Pituffik responsible for the missile warning system and monitoring the Arctic zone.
