LONDON, September 21. /TASS/. Residents of another village in England are considering holding a symbolic referendum on leaving the United Kingdom, The Times reported.

According to the newspaper, the village is Barnham in the eastern county of Suffolk, with a population of just over 600 people. The government is considering a nearby air force base as a possible site for a detention center for illegal migrants, prompting residents to consider holding the referendum in protest against the plans.

Barnham residents were inspired by a similar move by residents of the village of Piddington in the English county of Oxfordshire, who voted for independence from London by 285 votes to 26 in a plebiscite that had no legal significance.

Barnham Parish Council Chairman John Bauer said that a "small group" of local community representatives would travel to Piddington on Tuesday evening. They would meet with members of the campaign there "to discuss whether they could hold a similar referendum."
