Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett leads voting for UN secretary general post, poll shows
Eight Security Council members backed Rodrigues-Birkett’s continued participation, three opposed it and four expressed no opinion
NEW YORK, August 21. /TASS/. Guyana’s candidate Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett received the most support from UN Security Council members in the second straw poll of candidates for the post of UN secretary general, according to preliminary results of the unofficial vote held on Friday and obtained by TASS.
Eight Security Council members backed Rodrigues-Birkett’s continued participation, three opposed it and four expressed no opinion.
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General Rebeca Grynspan came in second with seven votes in favor and four against.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi also received seven votes in favor, but six Security Council members opposed his candidacy.
Senegal’s former president Macky Sall followed with six votes in favor, Olara Otunnu with five and Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces with four. Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet received two votes in favor, while Ivonne A-Baki received none.
