Qatar rejects using Strait of Hormuz as an instrument of political pressure

DOHA, August 11. /TASS/. Qatar supports any agreements that will ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz and prevent its use as an instrument of political pressure, said Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman Majed bin Mohammed al-Ansari.

"We in the state of Qatar support any formula of mutual understanding that guarantees the security of the strait and that it will not turn into an instrument of political pressure in the future," he said at a briefing.

Commenting on the statements of Iranian officials on the status of the Strait of Hormuz, the diplomat said that the position of the members of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf is that there is a need to return to the pre-war situation and ensure freedom of navigation.

"The management format in the future and after the current crisis is a matter for the respective regional states, it should reflect a full regional consensus within the framework of unconditional respect for international law," al-Ansari added.

On August 8, Oman's Foreign Ministry said that negotiations with Iran on shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz were taking place in a positive and constructive atmosphere. On the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the parties were nearing an agreement on the legal aspects of managing the strait and defining new routes. US Vice President JD Vance also noted progress in indirect contacts with Iran, adding that Washington is working to maximize energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
