EU uncertain who to pay for Kiev’s 90 bln euro loan — German MEP
Fabio De Masi accused the German government of irresponsibility for approving the loan to Ukraine without properly assessing the risks and consequences while "nothing has functioned in Germany for a long time."
BERLIN, August 11. /TASS/. Brussels has yet to discuss the details of the European Commission-approved 90-billion-euro loan to Ukraine and does not know who will bear the cost of the announced financing, Fabio De Masi, a European Parliament member and co-chair of Germany’s BSW party, said.
"The European Commission apparently does not even know how much EU member states will have to guarantee for the loan to Ukraine," De Masi told Berliner Zeitung.
He accused the German government of irresponsibility for approving the loan to Ukraine without properly assessing the risks and consequences while "nothing has functioned in Germany for a long time."
The EU’s 90-billion-euro military financing program for Ukraine for 2026-2027 was agreed upon in December 2025. Of the funds, 30 billion euros are intended to cover Kiev’s budget needs and 60 billion euros to finance military spending. The program was approved after the European Commission’s plan to seize frozen Russian Central Bank assets in Europe to fund Kiev’s military needs failed. The 90 billion euros will be raised through EU-wide borrowing, which EU countries will service and eventually repay. Kiev will receive the money free of charge, with the sole condition that it will have to return it if Russia "pays full reparations."
