TUNIS, August 10. /TASS/. Algerian authorities have transferred a total of four Soviet-and Russian-made helicopters to neighboring Niger – two Mi-24V helicopters and two Mi-171 helicopters – along with ammunition and spare parts for them, the press service of the Algerian Ministry of Defense reported.

"Two Mi-24V helicopters and two Mi-171 helicopters took off <…> on Sunday, August 9, 2026, <…> bound for Niamey Airport in Niger. In addition, a shipment of ammunition for these helicopters, spare parts, and materials for maintenance and logistical support was sent to the same destination aboard a military aircraft of our Air Force," reads a statement published on the ministry’s website.

Algeria decided to transfer the helicopters to Niger free of charge "to strengthen the fraternal and historical ties between the two countries." According to the statement, with this step, the North African republic "confirmed its intention to continue its efforts to ensure security and stability in the region."

Algeria is located next to Niger and shares a land border with it stretching over 950 km.
