BUDAPEST, August 8. /TASS/. Former Hungarian Supreme Court President Andras Baka has accepted the ruling Tisza party’s offer to serve as Hungary’s head of state, Prime Minister Peter Magyar said.

"We personally informed Andras Baka of the Tisza faction's decision and asked him to accept the offer to become the country's president. He accepted it, guided by his desire to serve the nation, and is ready to work for the unity of the Hungarian people and for a democratic, European Hungary," Magyar wrote on Facebook (banned in Russia as the platform is owned by Meta, which is designated as extremist in Russia).

Earlier, the Tisza party and Magyar pressured President Tamas Sulyok, who was appointed under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, to step down.

Hungary is a parliamentary republic where executive power is primarily exercised by the prime minister and government. The president is elected by parliament.
