EU seeks US-backed appointment of Bosnia high representative bypassing UN, Russia
According to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandar Vranjes, the European Union seeks "at any cost to preserve the high representative with dictatorial powers," even if the post is illegal and not approved by the UN Security Council
BELGRADE, July 4. /TASS/. Brussels tried to persuade Washington to support the appointment of a high representative of the EU in Bosnia and Herzegovina bypassing the UN Security Council and the votes of Russia and China, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandar Vranjes told TASS.
"Former partners - Washington on one side and Berlin, London, Paris and Brussels on the other - disagreed. During several rounds of talks, they failed to determine a candidate for the future high representative," Vranjes said. "European partners explicitly set a condition for Washington that the high representative must be selected exclusively within the framework of the Peace Implementation Council, bypassing the UN Security Council and the votes of Russia and China."
According to the diplomat, the European Union seeks "at any cost to preserve the high representative with dictatorial powers," even if the post is illegal and not approved by the UN Security Council. The ambassador emphasized that Brussels wants to maintain the practice of using so-called Bonn powers by the international official in order to continue efforts to confiscate state property of Republika Srpska.
