Fifty lawmakers signed in support of the bill’s initiative

VILNIUS, July 3. /TASS/. A bill lifting a ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania has been registered in the country’s parliament, the legislature’s secretariat said in a statement.

"Fifty lawmakers signed in support of the bill’s initiative, which is sufficient for it to be registered," the statement said.

The bill proposes removing Article 137 of Lithuania’s Constitution, which prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear arms, on the country’s territory.

An earlier meeting hosted by Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus·da, attended by the prime minister, the defence ministry, the parliament speaker, and the chairs of parliamentary factions, supported plans to end the constitutional ban.

The country’s parliament must hold two votes on constitutional amendments, held three months apart. To pass, the proposal requires a qualified majority, or the support of at least 94 of the 141 members of parliament.
