BERLIN, June 24 /TASS/. The leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Poland, and France (the E5 group) have expressed support for the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, saying it lays the groundwork for restoring regional security and stabilizing the global economy.

"Leaders welcomed the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, secured under the leadership of President Trump with the support of mediating countries, and agreed this is a moment of opportunity to restore regional stability and stabilize the global economy," the joint statement issued after the E5 leaders' meeting in Berlin said.

They also reiterated the position that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons and once again voiced support for unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, the E5 countries expressed their readiness to take part in a multinational mission led by the United Kingdom and France to safeguard maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, including mine-clearing operations, "as soon as conditions allow." In their view, such a mission would contribute to the security of shipping in the waterway.

Earlier, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. On June 21-22, US-Iran talks on implementing the memorandum took place at the Swiss resort of Burgenstock, with mediation from Doha and Islamabad.

According to a joint statement issued by Pakistan and Qatar after the first round of negotiations, the meeting between Iranian and US representatives took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere. The parties made encouraging progress, including laying the groundwork for further technical consultations.
