The Slovak prime minister said that Bratislava feels very strong overall, as many point to its strong argument to succeed in court

BRATISLAVA, May 26. /TASS/. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the heads of government of many EU countries were hinting to him about the possibility of joining Bratislava's lawsuit against the European Commission (EC) over the ban on Russian gas imports.

"We filed a complaint against the EC because Russian gas supplies will cease in 2027. We feel very strong overall, because many are telling us that we have a very strong argument [to succeed in court]. Many prime ministers are hinting to me that they might join [us]," Fico said in a video posted on his Facebook page (banned in Russia, owned by Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia).

In April, Slovakia filed a complaint with the Court of Justice of the European Union over the ban on gas purchases from Russia. As Fico said earlier, Bratislava does not view the lawsuit as a conflict with the EU, but rather as a necessary measure to protect its economic interests. According to the Prime Minister, the EU "absolutely needs Russian gas and oil."

Slovakia's contract for Russian gas supplies expires in 2034.

On January 26, the EU Council finally approved a complete ban on Russian LNG supplies to the EU from January 1, 2027, and on pipeline gas imports from September 30, 2027. The ban on LNG imports under short-term contracts took effect on April 25, 2026, and short-term pipeline gas contracts must be terminated by June 17, 2026.
