Tehran, Washington not yet close to agreement to end war — Iranian diplomat
Esmaeil Baghaei emphasized that "the main focus of the negotiations is on ending the war"
DOHA, May 22. /TASS/. Iran and the US have not yet reached an agreement to end the conflict, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated.
"We cannot say with certainty that we have reached the stage where an agreement is close," the Tasnim news agency quoted the diplomat as saying. Baghaei emphasized that "the main focus of the negotiations is on ending the war." Commenting on the visit to Tehran by Pakistani Army Staff Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, the spokesman noted that the increased frequency of visits by foreign delegations is "a continuation of the diplomatic process." He also confirmed that a delegation from Qatar is currently holding consultations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, but "Pakistan continues to act as the mediator in the negotiations [with the US]."
Earlier, the IRNA news agency reported that Munir had arrived in Tehran as part of a mediation mission between Iran and the US. According to its information, Islamabad’s efforts are aimed at resolving existing differences. The agency emphasized that Munir’s visit "does not mean that an understanding has been reached on the initial terms."
