US has no good options left to end Iran conflict — ex-ambassador to Israel
Dan Shapiro noted that the US leader continued to toggle back and forth between the same unappealing options
WASHINGTON, May 18. /TASS/. The administration of US President Donald Trump no longer has any options acceptable to Washington for ending the conflict with Tehran, said Dan Shapiro, a US expert on the Middle East and former US ambassador to Israel (2011-2017).
"Trump continues to toggle back and forth between the same unappealing options: 1 - continue the Strait standoff; global econ crisis worsens; 2 - hit Iran harder; Iran hits back, global econ crisis worsens faster; 3 - accept less on nuke program and Strait management; US looks weak," Shapiro wrote on X.
Earlier, Trump stated that the US would renew its strikes against Iran with new force if no agreement is reached with Tehran.
The US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. In response to the strikes on its territory, the Islamic Republic decided to block the Strait of Hormuz. On April 7, the US president announced a two-week mutual ceasefire with Iran. Ten days later, shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz started to get back on track. On April 21, the White House extended the ceasefire unilaterally, while also imposing its own blockade on Iranian ports. For its part, Tehran said it had no intention of recognizing such measures and would act in accordance with its own interests.
