US move not to deploy missiles in Germany could be positive news for Berlin — politician
Sahra Wagenknecht deemed as "intimidating" the idea that the decision on when to launch such missiles rests with someone like US President Donald Trump
BERLIN, May 4. /TASS/. German politician Sahra Wagenknecht hailed as good news the US decision to cut troop numbers in Germany given the move will also include dropping plans to station medium-range missiles in Germany.
"If it’s true that the partial withdrawal of US troops would also cancel plans to station medium-range missiles, this would be the best news to our security in a long while," the politician, the founder of BSW party, said in a post on X. According to her, the idea that the decision on when to launch such missiles rests with someone like US President Donald Trump "was intimidating."
"[US] missiles would transform Germany into a primary goal," Wagenknecht noted. "We do not need US troops or American offensive weapons in Germany but we finally need a new eastern policy that would prioritize de-escalation, rebuilding of completely crumbled trust and common security, unless Europe would one day wish to burn in a nuclear war," she argued.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported, citing a Pentagon official that the Trump administration is planning to cancel the deployment of longer-range weapons in Germany, including a Tomahawk missile battalion. In July 2024, Washington and Berlin announced plans to station Tomahawks in Germany before 2027. The agreement was made during the tenure of 46th US President, Joe Biden.
