Trump’s inconsistent rhetoric damages negotiations with Iran — TV
The Washington administration officials pointed to "the Iranians’ deep mistrust of the US"
NEW YORK, April 21. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump’s contradictory public statements are harmful to the negotiation process with Iran, CNN reported, citing Washington administration officials.
"The Iranians didn’t appreciate the US president negotiating through social media and making it appear as if they had signed off on issues they hadn’t yet agreed to, and ones that aren’t popular with their people back home," the broadcaster quoted an official as saying. The officials also pointed to "the Iranians’ deep mistrust of the US."
CNN notes that Trump’s public statements "have only continued to add to the uncertainty surrounding negotiations." On Monday, he said that US Vice President JD Vance would not travel to Islamabad for a meeting with Iranian officials, but later, US Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright said that Vance would lead the US delegation. After that, Trump stated that Vance had already departed for Pakistan but a number of sources noted that the vice president planned to depart for talks on Tuesday.
Trump has also offered conflicting information on the date of talks. He said they were expected to begin on Monday, while CNN suggested that the negotiations would be held on Wednesday. The sources point out that the situation around the talks remains uncertain.
According to CNN, Iran’s delegation will be led by parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
