Polish Foreign Minister expresses skepticism about European nuclear umbrella idea

MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski does not consider the idea of a European nuclear umbrella effective or realistic.

"I am skeptical about the discussions on this. It is not the case that the more you talk about it, the closer you get to it," Sikorski said in an interview with Ukrainian journalist Natalya Moseychuk. "The nuclear arsenals of the United Kingdom and France are small, and they do not perform the role that the American deterrence capability performs," the Polish minister stressed. He recalled that NATO is already, in essence, a "nuclear alliance."

Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and Denmark indicated that they were open to discussing the issue. The Financial Times reported that US allies in Europe are exploring the possibility of creating their own nuclear shield amid the US administration’s course toward restoring relations with Russia.
