Alexander Mikhailov warned that a US ground intervention in Iran would likely result in heavy casualties on both sides

MOSCOW, April 3. /TASS/. The United States may consider halting all cooperation with NATO, as the alliance has failed to respond to Washington’s calls for support in the Iran conflict, military expert Alexander Mikhailov, head of the Central Executive Committee of the nationwide organization Officers of Russia and a retired FSB major-general, told TASS.

"Furthermore, the US could essentially become NATO’s grave digger. Several years ago, even before the events in Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron remarked that NATO had exhausted itself. Recent developments have demonstrated that any form of joint action is now out of the question. Everyone is pursuing their own interests. President Donald Trump is furious because the alliance no longer provides value, and there’s little point in supporting NATO that ignores US requests," Mikhailov stated.

He noted that Trump appears intent on launching a ground operation in Iran, but emphasized that, in the current environment, air superiority remains critical to military success. Although the US boasts a formidable air force, Mikhailov pointed out that area bombing in such terrains yields limited effectiveness. Meanwhile, Iran has accumulated a substantial arsenal of UAVs and guided missiles capable of targeting troop concentrations and equipment.

Mikhailov warned that a US ground intervention in Iran would likely result in heavy casualties on both sides, creating "mountains of corpses," and that such losses could serve as a powerful deterrent to Washington.

Earlier, in an interview with Reuters, Trump voiced his disdain for NATO and hinted at the possibility of withdrawing the US from the alliance. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, the American president explained that he might reconsider US participation, citing NATO’s failure to support Washington in the Iran conflict. In that interview, Trump referred to NATO as a "paper tiger" and admitted that he has never held much genuine regard for it.
