VILNIUS, April 2. /TASS/. No country can replace the US in NATO, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said, commenting on US President Donald Trump’s threats to withdraw the country from the alliance.

"Of course, we cannot replace the Americans because NATO is built on alliances. We must do everything to ensure those relationships function, but unfortunately, a relationship is always a two-way street. That is the concern right now," the EU’s chief diplomat told the national public broadcaster ERR.

Kallas also stressed that European countries need to focus on strengthening their own defense capabilities.

Earlier, in an interview with Reuters, the White House chief stated that he feels "disgust" for NATO and is considering the US withdrawal from the alliance. In a conversation with The Telegraph, the US president explained that he is considering revising US participation in NATO, as the alliance did not support Washington in the war with Iran. In the same interview, the US leader called NATO a "paper tiger" and admitted that he had never had much sympathy for the alliance.
