Turkey’s approach to Black Sea security is based on maintaining the balance and stability ensured by the convention and on the leading role of the Black Sea littoral states, the ministry noted

ANKARA, April 2. /TASS/. Turkey will not accept any compromises regarding the implementation of the Montreux Convention on the regime of the Turkish Straits as part of its measures to safeguard security in the Black Sea, a representative of the country’s Defense Ministry told reporters.

"Turkey’s core strategy in the Black Sea dictates that there can be no compromise between the principle of regional responsibility [of Black Sea states] and the Montreux Convention. Turkey’s approach to Black Sea security is based on maintaining the balance and stability ensured by the convention and on the leading role of the Black Sea littoral states. Thanks to this strategy, the Black Sea has not become a large-scale conflict zone," the ministry noted.

The Defense Ministry representative emphasized that since the start of the Ukraine crisis, "Turkey has consistently applied the provisions of the convention, preventing the conflict from spreading to maritime areas."

"Despite growing geopolitical competition and security risks in the Black Sea, our country remains committed to preserving stability in the region, preventing escalation of tensions, and ensuring security primarily through the efforts of the littoral states. In this regard, Turkey continues to take proactive measures to prevent the Black Sea from becoming a zone of competition and plays an active role in upholding the regional security framework," the ministry said.
