CHISINAU, August 29. /TASS/. The Transnistrian government may agree to reunification with Moldova only under federal conditions, Vadim Krasnoselsky, president of the unrecognized republic, said at a press conference, commenting on the situation surrounding the Gagauz autonomy.

"I am convinced that if we are to build a common state called Moldova, it must be exclusively federal or confederal, otherwise it will not survive. The autonomy of Gagauzia is a good example," Krasnoselsky said.

"We have long been observing Gagauzia and see that autonomy is gradually turning into part of a unitary state, completely deprived of any rights. Of course, this worries us, and we are drawing the appropriate conclusions. This is our right, and we certainly stress this in the negotiation process. In other words, we highlight what an autonomy really is," he noted.

Relations between Gagauzia’s leadership and the Moldovan government worsened further in 2023, following Gutsul’s electoral victory and her subsequent declaration to strengthen regional ties with Russia. She also publicly criticized Chisinau’s confrontational policies toward Moscow. The Moldovan authorities attempted to declare her election invalid, but the Gagauz parliament expressed solidarity with Gutsul, leading to mass protests across the region. Meanwhile, President Maia Sandu refused to sign a decree recognizing Gutsul as a member of the government, despite legal requirements to do so.
