EU leaders stubbornly seek to block peace in Ukraine after talks with Trump — politician
Florian Philippot cited statements by several participants of the meeting, in particular, Finnish President Alexander Stubb who said that the Russian leader was "untrustworthy," and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz who said Ukraine could not make territorial concessions
PARIS, August 19. /TASS/. European leaders’ statements following the meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington show that they are determined to obstruct efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, said Florian Philippot, leader of the French political party Les Patriotes.
"Euro-madmen feel that yesterday Trump completely bent them over, so this morning they staged a festival of aggression on their part, once again trying to undermine the forthcoming peace!" he wrote on his X social network page.
The politician cited statements by several participants of the meeting, in particular, Finnish President Alexander Stubb who said that the Russian president was "untrustworthy," and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz who said Ukraine could not make territorial concessions.
Philippot also quoted remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke about the need to step up sanctions against Russia, Russia's unwillingness to achieve peace, and the need to continue providing Ukraine with arms after the conclusion of a peace agreement.
"Yes, yesterday Trump humiliated them, reined them in, subdued them like never before, he is forcing them to follow the path of peace, which they keep stubbornly rejecting! Their agenda is fear and war! The result is, they go mad!" Filippot said. The politician urged his compatriots in France to put pressure on Macron and to take part in protests against sending money and weapons to Kiev and for "seizing the potential for peace in Ukraine" on September 6.
Trump held meetings with Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky and several European leaders who had arrived to support him on Monday. The one-on-one conversation between Trump and Zelensky lasted for about an hour, after which the US leader met with the European leaders and Zelensky. The latter extensively thanked Trump and, this time around, unlike during his previous visit to the Oval Office which culminated in a public backlash streamed live, chose not to argue with the US leader. At the same time, no specific statements were made.
After those talks, Trump held a 40-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two discussed the prospects for holding a trilateral meeting between them and Zelensky. Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov said that the leaders of Russia and the United States spoke in favor of continuing direct talks between Moscow and Kiev, including the possibility of elevating their level.
