EU leaders joined talks with US president in White House 'armed with flattery' — paper

NEW YORK, August 19. /TASS/. European leaders came for talks with US President Donald Trump in Washington 'armed with flattery,' the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail wrote on Tuesday.
For the first time, so many European leaders gathered in the US capital at the same time, the paper noted. "And in all the meetings in the White House’s 225-year history, few can have seen such shared lavish praise and mutual admiration," the publication reads.
"It was a conscious effort to avoid the diplomatic fiasco of Zelensky’s previous visit to the White House. Too much was at stake: their reputations as peacemakers, the future of Ukraine and the security of Europe," the newspaper pointed out.
For Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky and EU leaders, one of the main tasks was to "to prise Trump from the diplomatic embrace of Russian [President] Vladimir Putin," so they decided that "the best approach to Trump was flattery," the paper added.
Trump held a meeting with Zelensky and several European leaders on resolving the Ukraine conflict in the White House on Monday. The talks involved Finnish President Alexander Stubb, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
The White House hosted such a large number of top leaders simultaneously for the first time in history. This unprecedented lineup of participants, which underscores the importance of the issue under discussion, was also highlighted by the US president.
In addition, Trump held a phone conversation with Putin during the meeting. According to the US leader, they discussed, among other things, the prospects for a meeting between Putin and Zelensky, followed by trilateral talks. Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov said that the leaders of Russia and the United States spoke in favor of continuing direct talks between Moscow and Kiev, including the possibility of raising their level.
