Number of refugees in Uganda approaching two million due to regional instability
According to the report, the escalation of tensions in Sudan, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is forcing nearly 600 people to cross the border with Uganda daily in search of security and vital assistance
NAIROBI, August 5. /TASS/. More and more refugees are seeking shelter in Uganda, their number could reach two million by the end of the year, the Africanews outlet reported.
According to it, the escalation of tensions in Sudan, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is forcing nearly 600 people to cross the border with Uganda daily in search of security and vital assistance.
Uganda is now the largest refugee-hosting country in Africa and the third largest globally. It is home to approximately 1.93 million refugees, one million of whom are under the age of 18.
According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Uganda has a progressive policy towards refugees, allowing them to live, work, and access governmental services. However, a lack of financing seriously impacts the provision of aid and threatens the many-year process.
"The emergency needs are massive, and we are simply not able to meet them," UNHCR External Relations Director Dominique Hyde told Africanews. "Whether it's water, shelter, or food, only 25% is funded," she emphasized. According to the official, if the international community does not take action by September, when the emergency funding will run out, more families will be left homeless and malnourished.
