Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran's response to the Israeli aggression spared the Middle Eastern countries from a broader conflict

MINSK, June 27. /TASS/. A great number of Iranian civilians have been killed and wounded because of Israeli strikes on the Islamic republic, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said.

"During the Israeli regime’s attacks on Iran, numerous unlawful and criminal acts were committed against off-duty military personnel, university professors, and ordinary citizens. Strikes on residential neighborhoods, public infrastructure, hospitals, and medical centers resulted in many civilian casualties," he said in a video address to the participants of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council’s meeting with an expanded circle of delegates.

"Over the course of this 12-day self-imposed war, Iran’s Armed Forces acted in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, exercising their right to lawful defense of the Iranian people, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity," Pezeshkian added.

He said Iran's response to the Israeli aggression spared the Middle Eastern countries from a broader conflict. "If the Zionist regime's aggression had gone unanswered, it could have led to a full-scale and uncontrolled war in the region," the politician said.

In the early morning hours of June 13, Israel launched a military operation against Iran. Less than 24 hours later, Iran retaliated. Nine days later, on the morning of June 22, US jets attacked three Iranian nuclear facilities, entering the conflict. The following evening, Tehran launched a missile strike on Al Udeid, the largest US military airbase in the region, located in Qatar. According to the US authorities, there were no casualties or significant damage.

On June 24, Trump announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a complete ceasefire. The Israeli authorities confirmed that they had accepted the US proposal and announced that they had completed all objectives in their operation against Iran. In turn, Tehran said that it had achieved a victory over Tel Aviv by forcing it to unilaterally halt its aggression.
