Rafael Grossi stressed that the safe restart and reliable functioning of such a huge facility as the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant undoubtedly requires compliance with a large number of requirements

KALININGRAD, June 6. /TASS/. Technical issues like stable water supply and external power sources must be ensured before the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) can resume full-scale operations, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said.

He stressed that the safe restart and reliable functioning of such a huge facility as the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant undoubtedly requires compliance with a large number of requirements. "This has to do with the supply of water, which has been under stress for some time, this has to do with the external lines of power that feed and relay the power produced by the plant. So there is a number of technical matters that needs to be addressed," he noted, adding that IAEA experts remain in constant contact with the relevant responsible authorities of Russia on these issues.

Launching the Zaporozhye NPP is not an "overnight situation when you can just switch on such a big plant that has been shut down for almost three weeks," this work will require a great deal of effort and compliance with all technical parameters, Grossi told reporters following a meeting with Russia's Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation CEO Alexey Likhachev in Kaliningrad.

Earlier, Likhachev stated that Rosatom had already prepared a comprehensive plan for the phased relaunch of the nuclear power plant. The plan is currently awaiting approval by the Russian government and Russia's Ministry of Energy. In particular, Rosatom has begun construction of a floating pumping station with a capacity of up to 80,000 cubic meters per hour to supply the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, should the NPP units be brought to their design capacity.
