US risks disrupting talks by demanding that Iran stop uranium enrichment — senior diplomat
Majid Takht-Ravanchi emphasized that Iran would never compromise on enrichment
DUBAI, May 19. /TASS/. Talks between the United States and Iran on the Islamic republic’s nuclear dossier may lead nowhere if Washington keeps insisting that Tehran must reject its uranium enrichment program, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi warned.
"From the outset, we said that if their (the US - TASS) position is zero enrichment, it’s obvious that negotiations will go nowhere. We will never compromise on enrichment," Takht-Ravanchi told Mizan Online News Agency.
Earlier, Washington demanded that Tehran abandon its uranium enrichment and actually give up its nuclear program. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has said that in the event the sanctions are lifted, Tehran is ready to discuss with the US the restriction of volumes and levels of enriching uranium but will never completely shut down its nuclear program as the right to peaceful nuclear development is guaranteed to all the countries that signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), where Tehran was one of the first signatories.
The United States and Iran have held four rounds of Oman-brokered talks on settling differences around Tehran’s nuclear program. The first round was held in Muscat on April 12, the second one — in Rome on April 19, and the third and fourth rounds took place in the Omani capital city on April 26 and May 11. At the talks, the Iranian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff headed the US delegation.
Laurence Norman, a reporter at The Wall Street Journal, said, citing sources, that a fifth round of talks between Iran and the United States may take place in the Italian capital as early as next weekend.
