VATICAN, May 8. /TASS/. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected a new pope, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti announced.

Prevost, who was chosen on the second day of the conclave earlier on Thursday, will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
