UN spokesman confirms plans for sweeping reforms
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was "very clear in his aim to push forward ambitious reforms to this organization, not only to save money but to make it more efficient," Stephane Dujarric said
UNITED NATIONS, May 3. /TASS/. UN secretary-general’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric confirmed plans for a sweeping reform of the world body.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was "very clear in his aim to push forward ambitious reforms to this organization, not only to save money but to make it more efficient," when he talked to reporters on 12 March, the spokesman said.
The UN will look at how it uses its resources, revisit mandates from member states and consider structural changes to the UN system, according to Dujarric.
"We’ve asked senior officials and others to submit suggestions and how we can improve this organization," he said.
The secretary-general will be reporting back to member states over the next few weeks, the spokesman said.
Reuters reported previously, citing a confidential memo from a UN task force, that the world body is considering drastic changes to the way it operates. The move is driven by financial woes, as the UN is owed $2.7 billion by its largest donor, the US.
