Trump may reduce US military presence in Europe — Swedish defense minister
According to the minister, European countries "must one way or another take more responsibility in regard to ensuring the security" of the continent
PARIS, March 28. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump’s administration may reduce the country’s military presence in Europe, Sweden’s Defense Minister Pal Jonson believes.
"Currently, the US is reconsidering the deployment of its forces across the world. <…> It would not be surprising to me if the US reduced its presence in Europe," he said in an interview with the Le Figaro newspaper.
According to the minister, European countries "must one way or another take more responsibility in regard to ensuring the security" of the continent. In addition to Trump, his predecessors urged Europe to be self-reliant as well, the minister said. That is why, according to him, Sweden doubled its military spending in 2023-2024 (to 2.4% of GDP) and aims to increase the figure to 3.5% of GDP by 2030.
