Tajik, Russian leaders discuss special services' work on countering threats — press office

According to the report, the presidents addressed the issues of strengthening cooperation in security and enhancing the coordinated work by special services and law enforcement agencies aimed at countering challenges and security threats

DUSHANBE, March 17. /TASS/. Tajikistan and Russia intend to enhance the operations by special services and law enforcement to counter security threats, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Russian leader Vladimir Putin noted during their talks in the Kremlin.

According to the Tajik leader's press service, the presidents addressed the issues of strengthening cooperation in security and enhancing the coordinated work by special services and law enforcement agencies aimed at countering challenges and security threats. Moreover, the two heads of state focused on the issues of cooperation within regional and global organizations.

Rahmon emphasized at the beginning of the meeting that "security issues hold a special place on the bilateral agenda" and voiced his readiness to discuss "the state and prospects of [bilateral] relations, as well as international and regional issues" with Putin.

In 2012, Tajikistan and Russia signed a treaty on the permanent stationing of Russia’s 201st military base in the republic to ensure regional security in the CSTO member states' area of responsibility. In 2014, a program on upgrading the Armed Forces of Tajikistan was adopted. Under the program, Russia supplies arms and military equipment to the country. Furthermore, officers are trained at Russian military universities, and joint operational and combat training events are held every year. In April 2021, the two countries signed an agreement to establish a joint regional Russian-Tajik air defense system, which will become a component of the joint CIS air defense system.

In February, Russian Ambassador to Dushanbe Semyon Grigoryev told TASS in an interview that the two countries were successfully pursuing tasks in the area of military cooperation. He also emphasized that the viability of cooperation in this field is indisputable and had repeatedly passed the test of time.
