Georgescu registers as candidate for Romania’s president again
Calin Georgescu continues to position himself as an independent candidate
BUCHAREST, March 7. /TASS/. Former independent candidate for Romania’s president Calin Georgescu has again registered with the Central Electoral Bureau as a candidate for the upcoming presidential election due on May 4, the Agerpress news agency reported.
He was accompanied by hundreds of supporters with banners, flags and vuvuzelas, who were chanting "Georgescu," "Freedom," "We want peace, not war."
Georgescu continues to position himself as an independent candidate. He is supported by the opposition Alliance for the Union of Romanians and Party of Young People.
Bucharest’s mayor, Nicisor Dan, also registered as candidate for president on Friday.
The Central Electoral Bureau and the Constitutional Court are to either accept to turn down Georgescu’s candidature and a criminal case against the man. He is facing six charges, with the most serious of them being incitement of actions against the constitutional order. In particular, he is accused of seeking to destabilize the situation in Romania with the help of a group of mercenaries after the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election in December 2024.
Georgescu is topping popularity ratings in Romania, with around 40% of support.
On November 24, 2024, Romania held the first round of the presidential election, in which Georgescu received a plurality. On December 6, Romania's Constitutional Court annulled the entire electoral process and ordered a new election. This decision followed the declassification of documents by Romanian intelligence services, which revealed, among other things, that Georgescu had illegally financed his campaign. The government acknowledged the Constitutional Court's decision and set the dates for a re-run of the presidential elections for May 4 and May 18 of this year.
