BRUSSELS, March 6. /TASS/. The conflict in Ukraine and Europe’s defense build-up will top the agenda of the European Union’s emergency summit in Brussels.

According to an EU official, both topics will be discussed in the context of the US new administration’s positions on the Ukraine conflict and European defense. The diplomat noted that although the United States’ talks with Russia may impact the situation in Ukraine, the change in the US’ position has not made the EU to reconsider its strategy on Ukraine. But, in his words, in light of the new situation in relations with the United States, the European Union should be more independent and take care about its defense.

Vladimir Zelensky has been invited to the summit. After delivering a speech, he will leave the meeting and leaders of the 27 EU nations will discuss potential security guarantees for Kiev. They will also discuss the plan for rearming Europe that was presented by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday.

Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday that she had proposed to EU leaders a plan to rearm the alliance to the tune of 800 billion euros.
