UNITED NATIONS, March 4. /TASS/. The United Nations General Assembly has supported Russia’s draft resolution on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a TASS correspondent reported.

The document was passed by a consensus. Before voting, Algeria, Malaysia, Venezuela, South Africa, Vietnam, Congo, Kenya, and Iraq joined as co-authors.

Along with Russia, the resolution was initiated by Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. It "invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, non-governmental organizations and individuals to observe" May 8 and 9 "in an appropriate manner to pay tribute to all victims of the Second World War."

The document also "requests the President of the General Assembly to hold a special solemn meeting of the General Assembly in commemoration of all victims of the Second World War in the second week of May in 2025 and every five years thereafter" and asks "the Secretary-General to bring the present resolution to the attention of all Member States and organizations of the United Nations system and to take measures necessary for its implementation."
