Main topic of current US-Hungary consultations is settlement in Ukraine — Szijjarto
The foreign minister underscored that the Hungarian side maintained constant contacts between the US administration and the Hungarian government at various political levels
BUDAPEST, March 3. /TASS/. The Hungarian government maintains constant contacts with the US administration, and the main topic of the ongoing consultations between them is the establishment of peace in Ukraine, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto announced.
Speaking at a press conference after a meeting in Budapest with his North Macedonian counterpart Bujar Osmani, he also confirmed that a telephone conversation took place on Sunday between Prime Minister Viktor Orban and President Donald Trump.
"We maintain constant contacts between the US administration and the Hungarian government at various political levels, including at the senior leadership level. The Prime Minister spoke with the President, and this week there will also be high-level contacts between the US administration and the Hungarian government. Of course, the most important topic of negotiations, conversations and any contacts now is establishing peace [in Ukraine]," Szijjarto said.
Earlier, the online publication Index reported, citing its sources at the US Embassy in Budapest, that Orban and Trump discussed ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict in a telephone conversation on Sunday. The publication noted that their conversation took place after Trump's meeting with Vladimir Zelensky at the White House on February 28. A heated argument broke out between the participants of that meeting, which was broadcast live on television. The argument turned into a public spat, after which Zelensky left the White House early. Immediately after this, Orban came out in support of Trump, saying that he had defended the cause of peace at the meeting with Zelensky. "Strong leaders make peace, weak ones make war," the Hungarian Prime Minister wrote on the X social network.
