LONDON, February 27. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump’s Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing Peter Navarro calls for redrawing the border with Canada, the Daily Telegraph writes, citing a source.

"Navarro recommended revising the Canada-US border, which is just crazy and dangerous," the source told the paper. "Peter Navarro is in post, and he is taking advantage of being there by himself with no one else in post to challenge his extreme positions. This will change as soon as the many other trade and economic positions are filled," he added.

According to the source, Canada has instructed its delegates to withdraw from negotiations with the US until Jamieson Greer and Howard Lutnick, two incoming members of Trump’s cabinet, are confirmed by the senate as they are viewed as being less extreme than Navarro. Lutnick was confirmed by the US Senate as Secretary of Commerce on February 19. Greer was confirmed as top US trade negotiator on February 26 but has not yet taken office.

The Daily Telegraph notes that proposals also put forward by Navarro "include expelling Canada from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network." The Financial Times reported earlier that the issue was being discussed at the highest level in the White House.

Trump has repeatedly said that many Canadians are in favor of their country becoming the 51st American state. He believes that such a union will bring economic stability to Canada and protect it from external threats, which, according to the US president, come from Russia and China, among others. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded by saying his country would never become the 51st state.
