Ukraine demands security guarantees to finalize second economic deal with US — news outlet
The US demands "were often delivered with hostility," The Economist noted
LONDON, February 27. /TASS/. Kiev refuses to sign any second agreement with the United States that does not include security guarantees for Ukraine, The Economist wrote, citing a government source with knowledge of the negotiations.
The Ukrainian government is set to approve a framework agreement with the United States "to jointly exploit Ukrainian mineral resources," the British news outlet said. The framework agreement will be a "first step in a two-part settlement," with most of the details "to be determined in future negotiations." The framework agreement states the intention of the two parties to create a joint fund for investments into Ukraine. Kiev is expected to contribute 50% of the revenues from future government-owned resource projects into the fund, the article reads.
"[Vladimir] Zelensky does not intend to sign any second, fuller agreement that does not include broader security guarantees," the publication noted.
The US demands "were often delivered with hostility," The Economist noted. "On one occasion, the Ukrainians were given an 'hour to sign'; on another just six minutes," the newspaper wrote, citing sources.
