No Putin-Trump meeting scheduled yet, but countries continue to communicate — White House
"The president had direct dialog with Putin, and he has said that he believes both sides of this war want to see it end," Leavitt said
NEW YORK, February 26. /TASS/. A meeting between Russian and US presidents, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, has not been scheduled yet, but officials from the two countries maintain communication about settling the conflict in Ukraine, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Fox News.
"There's nothing on the books just yet. The president will continue to keep everybody informed on that," she said to a question about a potential meeting between the presidents.
"But I know that Steve Witkoff and Secretary [Marco] Rubio and our national security advisor, Mike Waltz, the president's entire delegation, who he's tasked with ending this conflict, had continued to be engaged with the Russians as well as the Ukrainians," the spokeswoman went on to say. "You have to talk to both sides to bring the war to an end."
"The president had direct dialog with Putin, and he has said that he believes both sides of this war want to see it end," Leavitt said, referring to the phone talks between Putin and Trump on February 12.
Both Moscow and Kiev want peace and "economic prosperity for all," she added.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 21 that there were no specific plans to hold a meeting between the Russian and US presidents.
"There is an understanding that such a meeting needs to happen, which was stated during the meeting of the Russian and American delegations in Riyadh," he said.
According to the spokesman, the presidents themselves also expressed a desire to meet.
Russian and US delegations held talks on February 18 that lasted about 4 1/2 hours. Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov and Russian Direct Investment Fund CEO Kirill Dmitriev. The US team included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz and Witkoff.
According to Ushakov, the delegations had a serious conversation on all the issues they wanted to cover, including bringing the views of Russia and the US closer together and Ukraine talks. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the talks with Washington officials as very useful and said that Russia and the US agreed to work toward a swift appointment of ambassadors to both countries.
Witkoff said following the talks, "We couldn't have imagined a better result." Waltz said US-Russia relations have the potential to become "very productive and stabilizing," and Trump is determined to move quickly toward that outcome.
